Welcome to Colon and Rectal (Colorectal) Surgery Services at Upstate Medical University

Here we want to provide you with as much helpful information as possible about the surgical and non-surgical management of diseases of the colon and rectum, as well as the benefits and risks of various treatments.

Our division is staffed by Dr. Jiri Bem the only board-certified colon and rectal surgeon at Upstate Medical University. This section of surgery specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the intestines and the rectum. These include colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, rectal prolapse, lower gastrointestinal (GI) problems, fecal incontinence, familial adenomatous polyposis, diverticulitis, complex anal fistulae and other rectoanal problems like hemorrhoidal disease, anal HIV and non-HIV related dysplasia.

We utilize the most modern diagnostic modalities, including endoscopy, radiology, rectal ultrasound, and manometric studies which allows a multidisciplinary approach to lower GI problems.

We offer unique therapeutic approaches for these conditions include sphincter-saving surgery, pouch procedures, ano-rectal reconstruction for fistula or fecal incontinence and interventional endoscopy. Minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches are utilized preferentially.

If you've been having some concerns regarding your symptoms, diagnosis, previous surgeries, ostomy care, or any other related issue then you should be able to find information here to help you learn more about those concerns.
